The New York Times recently named the Algarve as its top travel destination of 2012.
A Great Golfing Region

One of the most popular towns in the region is Vilamoura, which has become synonymous with the game of golf in recent years. Surrounded by some of the finest courses to be found anywhere in Europe, it’s easy to forget that it’s also home to a truly stunning marina.

There are some supremely attractive boats to be found here, some of which are owned by some of the wealthiest people in the world. A walk around this marina on a summer’s evening is a wonderful way to relax and to take in the many sights.

For the hungry tourist, there are several restaurants located nearby, offering the finest array of culinary temptations. Anything from local delicacies such as sardines and other fish dishes to the best meals from China, India, Greece and elsewhere.

December 2011 sees the introduction of a toll system on the main A22 road in southern Portugal, and even though motoring will now be a little more expensive it doesn’t mean you won’t be finding holiday bargains in this wonderful region.

There are plenty of cheap flights to the Algarve to be found on the web, so it’s easy for Britons to locate the best deals to Faro, the area’s main airport, in just a few minutes. Another blessing is that flights from all parts of Britain are mercifully short, even from Scotland.

Famous For its Food

Throughout the region, you will find some of the most welcoming beaches in the whole of Europe. The stunning climate is ideal for topping up the tan and doing very little else.

In the Algarve, time often seems to stand still thanks to the long, lazy days and the exciting nights. It comes as no surprise at all to discover that this delightful part of Portugal has been playing host to British tourists for many decades and will continue to do so for many more.

One of the reasons the region is so popular is the quality of the restaurants. They serve up a delicious combination of local delicacies and traditional dishes from elsewhere around the world.

Portugal is rightly famous for sardines, and visitors from the UK should be sure to try them at least once. These tasty fishes are wonderfully fleshy and plump, and are often served with a delicate tomato-based sauce that has to be tasted to be believed.

The November 2011 opening of the new extension to Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal by former Prime Minister Sir John Major has come as good news for holiday makers from the UK. Getting across to Europe’s sun-kissed hot-spots is now easier than it’s ever been, and the long queues of the past will now hopefully be forgotten in the coming months and years.

One of the destinations to benefit from this is Portugal. This iconic country is home to some of the continent’s most beautiful beaches, and also to a number of wonderful resorts, especially along the southern coast, the region known throughout the world as the Algarve. Flights from Gatwick are just a few short hours in length, adding to the region’s popularity.

Keeping Things to a Budget

Needless to say, keeping a close eye on the family spending is vital in the current economic climate, but with the ready availability of cheap flights to the Algarve, it’s possible to spend some time relaxing in this stunning location without having to break the bank. And it’s not just Gatwick that offers such superb bargains to the rather fortunate UK tourist.

Many visitors to the Algarve are in search of golf courses. The facilities in the region are among the finest in the world, and it has been a magnet for fans for several decades. And in addition to the top quality courses, the climate is perfect for golf. It’s generally pleasantly warm, often with a cooling breeze to make sure players don’t get over-heated during their rounds.

The news that the recent falling NASA satellite was set to miss the holiday spots of Europe came as a welcome relief to those planning vacations to Portugal. With the current availability of cheap flights to the Algarve, the industry is gearing up for a welcome rush of late-season tourists, all of them eager to catch some warm autumn sunshine.

The area is one of the most popular in Europe, an unsurprising fact when you consider the superb climate and the many wonderful amenities. The local hotels offer a friendly welcome to visitors, and feature everything you’d expect from modern establishments, often including Wi-Fi, swimming pools and highly rated restaurants and bars. Some of the larger hotels also have rooms which include cooking facilities.

Lot’s to Discover and Enjoy

Perhaps the jewel in the Algarve’s crown is Vilamoura, a vibrant town with plenty to see and do. The local nightlife is lively and exciting, with much of it centred on the beautiful marina. Here, you can enjoy a delicious meal followed by an evening of dancing in one of the many clubs. And if you fancy a gamble, the casino is ready and waiting for you. If you’re feeling lucky, this could be the place to win a little money.

Needless to say, holidays aren’t all about the evenings. During the day, you can soak up the sun and do very little else if you wish, because Portugal’s legendary climate is ideal for catching some rays. Alternatively, there is plenty to explore, including remote coves and isolated villages.

In 2012, the chances are that the UK media will be full of stories about the London Olympics. And while many people will be extremely excited about the festival of sport that’s about to hit our shores, many others will be eager to get away for a week or two, just to escape from the hype that will accompany the action from the stadium and all the other venues.

The prospect of a little rest and recuperation on a sun-kissed beach is one that appeals to many, and with the proliferation of cheap flights to the Algarve at the moment it’s easy to get away before, during and after the Olympics.

Keep Up To Date in Warmer Climes

A significant proportion of visitors to Portugal return year after year because they know they will always receive a very warm welcome.

With the increase of cable and satellite television broadcasts, and of course the easy availability of the Internet, you can still keep up with all the news from home, sporting or otherwise, so there’s never any need to feel completely cut off. Most hotels and bars have wi-fi facilities for those who need to stay in touch, and for most of us it’s just enough to know we have the choice.

A flight to the Algarve from London takes around 2.5 hours, so it’s not a stressful journey. The main airport for the area is Faro, and the beaches and resorts are just a short drive from there. If you’ve never been before, make 2012 (or even 2011) the year you finally get to this stunning region.

Autumn – that time of year when we reluctantly put away our summer wares for another year. It’s not all doom and gloom, though, because the season also serves up some of nature’s great spectacles!

This end of September sees the start of the Sagres Birdwatching Festival, which returns for its second year. Still in its infancy, the festival will not pull in as big a crowd as some of the more established offerings on the Algarve, but certainly has the goods to offer punters something a little special.

Each year, the Sagres Peninsula is the stage upon which thousands of migrating birds make an appearance. And the cast includes some big names: the Sparrow Hawk and the Booted Eagle are regulars, but you can expect cameos from the Black Vulture and even the Golden Eagle.

A Picturesque Place

The festival grants the opportunity for experts to witness one of nature’s great events, while it gives beginners and impulsive attendees the chance to see something truly different. The programme this year includes talks and quizzes, as well as the all important spotting (a sunset session and a night walk stand out as the must see attractions).

Plus what a setting, right down at Europe’s most south-westerly point, where the Algarve meets the Atlantic. Not only is the scenery stunning in itself, but the town of Sagres is a worthy host and a great place to set up camp.

With the ever-clement Portuguese climate still offering shorts-and-t-shirt weather, and with cheap flights available from many UK airports, it’s a great time to grab a week away.

Portugal’s Algarve region is attractive for its golden beaches, glorious weather and golf courses, as well as its rich culture and exciting nightlife. There are an abundance of exciting events happening all year round and the variety is such that there’s bound to be something for everyone.

If you’re looking to plan a holiday, there are many cheap flights to Portugal available, so the Algarve could be the perfect place for your break.

Lots of Screenings

For those visitors that are hoping to experience some culture whilst on holiday, the Algarve International Film Festival is held annually in the town of Portimão during November. This is Portugal’s oldest cinema event and centres upon a short film competition, which runs each year and includes high-quality entries from around the world. In addition to the main award, the juries give prizes for various other categories.

If you’re not going to be based in Portimão then don’t worry as there are film screenings across the region, meaning you won’t have to travel far to be involved. Screenings take place in a number of towns, including Lagos, Albufeira and Lagoa.

Another film festival based in the Algarve from 7th – 13th November is the International Animated Film Festival. Held in Espinho, south of Oporto, it is a well-known and respected event, screening newly produced animation films from around the world. If you’re interested in animated film and want to discover some film-makers of the future then this festival is the ideal opportunity.

The recent media reports about economic difficulties have highlighted worrying situations in the USA, Europe and the Far East. One of the indicators of market fluctuations – the price of oil – has been in the news again, with many experts predicting further increases that will affect all of us in one way or another. It’s a worrying time for everyone, but it’s not all bad news, though.

Despite the cost of fuel, there are plenty of cheap flights to The Algarve on the market at the moment. The region, which is located on the southern coast of Portugal, has a superb climate during the summer months, and has been welcoming British tourists for many years. If you haven’t been there before, be sure to take advantage of the value for money air travel as soon as possible.

Make the Most of the Holiday Budget

Many people who visit The Algarve decide to explore the area during their stay. Car hire in Portugal is relatively inexpensive, and the roads are excellent to drive on. In general, other motorists are very patient, perhaps because they are so used to having tourists in the area. The slow pace of life so beloved by local residents is probably another reason for the way they drive.

The main airport that serves The Algarve is located at Faro, to the east of the country. It’s modern and well-equipped, and there are several major car rental companies based there. Whether you are looking to book a small hatchback or a large family saloon, you can be sure of finding an affordable deal either in person, over the phone or on the Internet.
